Pub of the Year 2002

For the fourth year in succession, the Bitter End was voted the Branch Pub of the Year at the AGM of the West Cumbria and Western Lakes branch of CAMRA. The pub not only stocks at least two Jennings beers, one or two Bitter End beers, but also has a number of guest beers from around the country. The Kirkstile in Loweswater came a close second, and the Shepherd's Arms in Ennerdale was third. Three other pubs, out of the 170 or so real ale pubs in the West Cumbria branch area, were also shortlisted for this award: the Queen's in St Bees, the Bush in Cockermouth, and the Black Bull also in Cockermouth. The Bitter End will now go on to compete against the Pubs of the Year from each of the other three CAMRA branches in Cumbria for the award of Cumbria Pub of the Year, the winner of which then goes forward into the next round of the national competition. It is rumoured that in a rash moment Sue Askey said she would dance naked behind the bar if the Bitter End won again, so watch this space!!

Sue, at the ready, behind the bar!
