The Champion Beer of Britain, announced on 5th August 2003 at the Great British Beer Festival, is our Scottish favourite Bitter and Twisted, a refreshingly hoppy and fruity beer, brewed by Harviestoun. The silver award goes to Crouch Vale Gold from Essex and the bronze to Lidstone's Rowley Mild from Suffolk. North West brewer Bazens won bronze in the mild category for Black Pig Mild; Harrogate's Daleside notched up silvers in the bitters and speciality beers categories, with Daleside Bitter and Morocco. Another Yorkshire winner was Rooster's Hooligan which came joint third in the best bitter group.
Yates Fever Pitch was selected as one of the fourteen beers for tasting in the Bitters group but unfortunately lost out to Bitter and Twisted, Daleside, Triple fff's Alton Pride and Caledonian Deuchar's IPA which came joint third.
Bitter and Twisted also won the Bronze award at the Scottish Traditional Beer Festival in Edinburgh earlier in the year when Dark Island from Orkney Brewery in Quoyloo was named as the Champion Beer of Scotland 2003. Black Cuillin, from the Isle of Skye Brewery took the silver award.
