National Pub DESIGN Award

A North West pub has won the Joe Goodwin award in the annual National Pub Design Awards, sponsored by CAMRA, English Heritage and the Victorian Society.

The award for the best restored local goes to Holt’s Railway, Didsbury, Greater Manchester. This small, single-room pub has been refitted and expanded to the rear, into the area formerly devoted to the toilets and other services. The existing work has been retained, while new elements, such as a salvaged bar counter front, have been sympathetically introduced into the mix.

Dr Steve Parissien, from CAMRA’s Pub Design Award judging panel said, “The new, enlarged plan features a variety of small but individually defined spaces – a welcome contrast to the drinking barns beloved of pub owners who think more of reduced overheads than enhanced atmosphere”.
